transfiguration, coming Sunday

Gärtnerhaus, MylauOn Sunday the 11th of May my exhibition “transfiguration” will be opened. have installed my fairy tale objects just yesterday at the enchanted gardener’s house in Mylau, Vogtland.

The cottage from 1826 was home of the groundkeeper and gardener of the Mylau castle. Ten years ago the Fischers bought the rundown building and renovated it with passion and a taste for art. They turned the house into a cosy place for cultural events and private parties.
entrance from gardenI am happy to show my paper objects in these rooms that are so full of history and character. My collages and installations have been made with fairy tale books, twigs, wool and packaging cardboard. They deal with the question how the Fabulous and the Magical can be conserved and transformed if there were no more fairy tale books. You can wonder about this every coming Sunday afternoon, when the Fischers open the door of the gardener’s house and serve coffee and cake with art.

Transfiguration

woven story pattern with text from "The Emperor's new clothes"); detail - Ines SeidelUntil end of April my exhibition about GDR books going independent can still be seen in Munich. But I am already preparing my first show in Saxony. At the bottom of Mylau Castle, in the renovated house of the castle gardener I will show paper objects, wall hangings and collages that are related to fairy tales.
Under the topic “transfiguration” I combine pieces that have been shown last year in my fairy tale exhibition in Zeulenroda with new work. One of the new pieces is the woven story with text from “The Emperor’s new clothes”. As in the tale by Hans Christian Andersen, my pattern has the magic quality to be invisible to those who are not good. So everyone plagued by self doubt but otherwise not visually impaired should come to Mylau.
The vernissage is on Sunday, 11th of May at 2.30 p.m. and everyone is welcome!

set-up

Only two days left before my vernissage. Two almost relaxed days, as my husband and I are already done with installing the pictures and objects at Combinat 56. Photographer Simone Naumann accompanied us for a while and took some cool pictures …

One focus in Simone’s photography is storytelling. No wonder her pictures and the altered books were getting on so well. You can find more of her pics from the exhibition set-up here .

preparations: GDR books go selfemployed

preparations for my coming exhibitionThe preparations for my next exhibition are reaching the final ascent. Save the date: The vernissage will be on March 12, 2014. I will show my latest altered books Combinat 56, the creative coworking space in Munich.
story during metamorphosis I and II - Ines SeidelGDR books go self-employed. That is the title of my solo show which will feature paper works made from books printed in the GDR. Some of the books have been part of my childhood, others have been literally saved from being thrown into the trash can. 25 Jahre after the fall of the Berlin wall these books are leaving their passiveness and reinvent themselves. The break open and leave, they stop the torrent of words and embody their message with gestures and patterns. They reconciliate with their past and make suggestions for the future. These books have a lot in common with me and the citizens of the former GDR. But the experience of becoming independent connects them to all those who find themselves at a turning point in their development.

Vernissage: Essence of Wondering

The long awaited day had come! Before the first guests came in, I took a few more pictures of my show. Later it really got too crowded for that. Many familiar faces had shown up, some surprise guests and also many people that I did not know. It was so moving to see them all in this special place!

The mayor of Zeulenroda payed me a huge compliment in his opening speech when he said that my works reminded him of Joseph Beuys. I loved the guitar and flute music (by the local music school) that framed the opening ceremony. Ute Arnold, museum director, called my show “enchanting”. That word also fits the gift that I received from the museum: tea, a little owl and two old books (see pictures at the end).

I was also delighted about the flowers, my first sales and, especially, the personal words that guests found to thank me. My vernissage could not have been more beautiful than that!
thank you for the flowers
The “Essence of Wondering” is open for visitors until January, 19. If you can’t make it to Zeulenroda, have a look at my flickr-set.

The Essence of Wondering

Essence of Wondering - ExhibitionThe poster is going into print within the next days, the event calendar of the museum in Zeulenroda is already listing it – my very first exhibition!

I am just making a list of all the pieces that I want to show in the exhibition… Since spring I have been tinkering with fairy tales and with the question, if it is possible to tell the essence of a story in a picture. In the end, I made a lot of pictures and objects. Too many for the Atrium.
Now I have difficult choices to make. Which pieces are really good? A typical question in fairy tales! This question will definitely be on the show, that is already decided.
