sound system

sound system installation. Ines SeidelI have filled empty cereal boxes and other cardboard containers with silence. They are brimming with the same perfect stillness. But the packaging differs: There are pictures from the local train station, from the sky above the churches, or from corridors of administration buildings. They put different labels onto the silence.
When you listen to this sound system you can hear your own projected noise and assessments. The projections are wrapped around stillness. As it is in real life..Soundsystem Installation. Ines Seidel
My sound system will be part of the upcoming exhibition in the town hall of Neufahrn. Outside of the garage atmosphere it will sound very different, I guess.

15 to 27 plastic bags

18 plastic bags, sewn together with conciliatory gestures. Ines SeidelFrom a material with a history that reaches back thousands of years, we have created shopping statements. This cannot be the end of the story. Plastic bags are a cultural misunderstanding. That is why it took conciliatory gestures to grow 18 plastic bags into a wall hanging. And with gestures of joy, 15 plastic bags began to bloom again. 27 other plastic bags began to remember their long history that also includes life on the bottom of a sea.

The last time I was working with plastic bags I created patterns with my little frame loom. See more in this posting.

KOMMUNikation

Poster for the exhibiton "KOMMUNikation" in Neufahrn
From the 24th of July the town hall of Neufahrn will be all about communication. At least that is true for the halls where I will spread out with my posters, objects and wall hangings. The exposition “KOMMUNikation” will be all about language, listening and the unspoken, which are central to me. But it will also be about place and community.
In my last exhibition I have predominantly worked with old books but this time a few other materials will get their say: Used envelopes reveal secrets, plastic bags beg for conciliation and cereal boxes will be filled with the silence of Neufahrn, the place I am living in. Depending on their disposition, visitors can find humorous, profound or provocative messages. At any rate, there will be something to talk about!
The vernissage takes place on Thursday, the 24th of July at 7 p.m.. Not just the Neufahrn community is invited!

no language

I have no language for my reality. book with concrete. Ines Seidel“This is it: I have no language for reality. … how could one prove who one is in reality? I can’t. Do I even know myself who I am? This is the frightening experience of this period of remand: I have no language for my reality.” A passage from Max Frisch’s novel “I am not Stiller” (in my own translation). I have replaced the preceding pages with a concrete block.

Language is like cement, a story can be like concrete. Maybe that is so, because such a shape of story touches us deeply. It transmits an experience across the limits of the pronounceable.

transfiguration, coming Sunday

Gärtnerhaus, MylauOn Sunday the 11th of May my exhibition “transfiguration” will be opened. have installed my fairy tale objects just yesterday at the enchanted gardener’s house in Mylau, Vogtland.

The cottage from 1826 was home of the groundkeeper and gardener of the Mylau castle. Ten years ago the Fischers bought the rundown building and renovated it with passion and a taste for art. They turned the house into a cosy place for cultural events and private parties.
entrance from gardenI am happy to show my paper objects in these rooms that are so full of history and character. My collages and installations have been made with fairy tale books, twigs, wool and packaging cardboard. They deal with the question how the Fabulous and the Magical can be conserved and transformed if there were no more fairy tale books. You can wonder about this every coming Sunday afternoon, when the Fischers open the door of the gardener’s house and serve coffee and cake with art.

shopping patterns

shopping patterns - woven receipts by Ines SeidelShopping receipts can be condensed to reveal the personality type of the consumer. This sentence could be from a marketing text book. With my little loom I did as market researchers do. I worked through a bunch of my own receipts, condensed and connected them and indeed, the patterns that emerged say a lot about me. Within the limits of this technique, of course.

Transfiguration

woven story pattern with text from "The Emperor's new clothes"); detail - Ines SeidelUntil end of April my exhibition about GDR books going independent can still be seen in Munich. But I am already preparing my first show in Saxony. At the bottom of Mylau Castle, in the renovated house of the castle gardener I will show paper objects, wall hangings and collages that are related to fairy tales.
Under the topic “transfiguration” I combine pieces that have been shown last year in my fairy tale exhibition in Zeulenroda with new work. One of the new pieces is the woven story with text from “The Emperor’s new clothes”. As in the tale by Hans Christian Andersen, my pattern has the magic quality to be invisible to those who are not good. So everyone plagued by self doubt but otherwise not visually impaired should come to Mylau.
The vernissage is on Sunday, 11th of May at 2.30 p.m. and everyone is welcome!

Moss

moss on tracing paper (work in progress) - Ines Seidel

Tomtits are building a nest below the roof of our house. They lost quite an amount of moss right in front of our door. It just fell out of their little beaks. Nothing special happened. Or did it? What if the moss was meant as a greeting: Hello neighbours, we are just moving in!

What if the moss is a discreet piece of advice: As experts we advise you to make the entrance of your nest a little softer.

What if the moss is part of a curious investitagion: We tomtits use this to build nests and what are you going to do with this?

So I find myself in the middle of a moss story: I am drawing moss, gluing it on paper, I am stitching moss patterns and make moss from wool.

story with moss by Ines Seidel
If I place the drawings on tracing paper on top of each other, I get a nice mesh of moss layers. Or a book.
